چکیده

This paper develops a simple age-period-cohort framework in completing incomplete cohort fertility schedules, and makes full use of 1917–2005 U.S. data to obtain robust outcomes. Empirically, we indicate that the period effect is the key to transforming a fertility level into a fertility schedule. Accompanied by the smoothed version of tempo-variance-adjusted total fertility rates proposed in Kohler and Philipov (2001), we approximate the cohort fertility schedules fairly well and the estimates of all distributional parameters can be thereby obtained. Our approach is easy to implement and the data requirement is relatively light, indicating that the proposed method is readily applicable to countries whose data lengths are insufficiently long, and would be helpful for further empirical investigation of the relationship between cohort fertility behavior and other cohort-specific socioeconomic factors. 1 Department of Economics, National Central University, Taiwan. A Stochastic Version of the Brass PF Ratio Adjustment of Age-Specific Fertility Schedules

Estimates of age-specific fertility rates based on survey data are known to suffer down-bias associated with incomplete reporting. Previously, William Brass (1964, 1965, 1968) proposed a series of adjustments of such data to reflect more appropriate levels of fertility through comparison with data on children-ever-born by age, a measure of cohort-specific cumulative fertility. His now widely-us...

Completing the Fertility Transition: Jordan, Lebanon and Syria

The demographic transition in the Arab countries of Western Asia in general has been somewhat peculiar. Total fertility rose substantially before it began its historical decline. Technical Memorandum Number 819 Centralization vs. Competition in Subcontracting Operations

Consider a set of manufacturers all of which can outsource part of their workload to a third-party in first-come-first-serve order, each with the objective of completing his workload the soonest possible. The resulting manufacturer strategies are not optimal for the system and especially, they do not necessarily result to maximum utilization of the third-party capacity. For this reason, the thi...

The quality of male fertility data in major U.S. surveys.

Researchers continue to question fathers' willingness to report their biological children in surveys and the ability of surveys to adequately represent fathers. To address these concerns, this study evaluates the quality of men's fertility data in the 1979 and 1997 cohorts of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79 and NLSY97) and in the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG). C...

Data and Programs for the Paper ‘Tempo-Adjusted Period Parity Progression Measures, Fertility Postponement and Completed Cohort Fertility’, Demographic Research 6(6), 91–144

In Kohler and Ortega (2002a) [online available at Demographic Research, Volume 6, Article 6], we introduce a new set of tempo-adjusted period parity progression measures in order to account for two distinct implications caused by delays in childbearing: tempo distortions imply an underestimation of the quantum of fertility in observed period data, and the fertility aging effect reduces higher p...
